FAVORITE SOFTWARE

Because we are independent of all the software and data vendors, we can offer objective advice. My favorite software choices are:

EViews - EViews is the best all around econometric software. It is the successor to Micro TSP, and has been improved to take full advantage of the windows environment. It has a broad array of statistics, a good time series based database engine, and is easy to learn, very fast, and very affordable. One copy is $795, with no renewal fee. Upgrades are discounted.

Its modern user interface makes learning very easy, and allows even the novice user to explore its analysis and reporting easily. EViews can generate high quality graphics very quickly and accurately. Should you prefer to use another package for graphics or reports, EViews can export your data easily to a variety of popular data formats.

It also includes a programming language that can greatly streamline repetitive tasks. In short it is an excellent environment for time series data crunching and statistical analysis.

The FairModel is a free macro model written in EViews developed at Yale.

FAME - We are a value added developer for FAME. When EViews is not enough, FAME can handle much more sophisticated applications. FAME is a very powerful database package that can handle very large databases, and sophisticated statistics. It has great automation capabilities. For example, it has an application that allow you to pull data requests ad hoc from the FAME database to Excel while you work in Excel. It has another module that allows ad hoc graphs on the web.

The X12 Seasonal Adjustment from the U.S. Census - We prefer to use the X12 code directly from the Census because it is always more up to date, and all of its options are functional. Most econometric packages use older versions of the seasonal adjustment code and allow a small subset of options. One major difference between X12 and X11 is that X12 handles the end points better. The seasonal adjustment algorithm is based on a centered moving average. X12 performs an ARIMA forecast to help calculate the centered moving averages for the recent months. This produces more stable estimates for the end points that are less prone to revision in subsequent months. The code is difficult to use interactively, but it can be integrated into Visual Basic programs to seasonally adjust data routinely with little effort.

GREAT LINKS TO FREE STUFF

www.dismal.com - is a great source of free economic data and analysis. They have a calendar of economic data release dates, topical articles, detailed regional data tables, and an option to get economic data releases via email.

Economist Jokes - A long list of economic jokes.

National Association of Business Economists - Although much of the site requires membership, much of their site is available to the public.   New features include an economic calendar with links to the releases and a registry of economic consultants.

Resources for the Economist - contains a comprehensive list of links to all issues relating to economics. For example, they have a lists of conferences, consulting firms, software, other internet guides, and data sources.
